New Innovation in Tracking Luggage

Even if you have comprehensive travel insurance, losing your bag is not something you like while on vacation. Regardless of the cost, the lost bag can be a major inconvenience and can indeed spoil the whole holiday if not found and reunited with the owner quickly and efficiently. While comprehensive travel insurance can help by reclaiming the value of the bag and its contents, it can not help overcome the potential stress and complexity that a lost bag can cause.
While human error in baggage handling is inevitable, an innovation is currently being tested to minimize the risk of fully lost bags.

Tracking Luggage Electronically

Rimowa is a German luggage manufacturer and one that has been working with Lufthansa to develop the first digital power tag that can help track luggage. Fully integrated, this high-tech initiative serves to travel with carry bags more convenient, safer and faster.

Currently, the most common way to track luggage is to fix one half of the paper baggage there, and attach the other half to the owner’s passport. Both have the same barcode that can help when reuniting the bag with its rightful owner. However, a new, more efficient electronic tag will soon be in operation for Lufthansa passengers. How does it work?

The beauty of electronic tags is the convenience. Passengers traveling with Lufthansa will soon be able to download the Lufthansa App and use the Rimowa electronic tags to check baggage from home, when traveling to the airport, or even wherever they like. All it takes is one click and the power of Bluetooth to transfer data from an electronic boarding pass held on the phone to a luggage equipped with an electronic tag. Once the suitcase is checked, the data will appear on the assimilated data component into the corresponding bag. Using this convenient system also means that passengers just need to get to the Drop Off Baggage counter at the airport, thus avoiding long queues.

The tags are the same size as the current paper tags and the bag-specific essential information is protected only in case of contact with moisture, extreme temperatures or the impact of some types.

So far only Lufthansa is planning to provide this service, but other airlines will surely lead.

When Do We Expect Product Launch?

The plan is for Rimowa electronic tags to be launched early next year. Currently there is a trial stage being conducted, so that should be evaluated as a success, then the proposed launch date should be respected.

Even if you plan to enter into this initiative in the future, comprehensive travel insurance remains to be done while traveling, whether for business or pleasure.
