Carpet Cleaning by Hands is Actually Possible

When enough dirt gets onto your carpet it becomes noticeable and hard to hide. Without renting a carpet cleaner and relying on technology to clean things up there’s a more cost-effective way. With a few things you may already have in your home waiting to be put to good use, your carpets can look like new once again.
Here’s the thing about carpeting: the plush, dense fibers we love to feel underfoot are also really great at clinging to dust, dirt, smoke, pet odor, and whatever other grime comes through the door.

Vacuuming your carpet regularly, at least the highest traffic areas, will delay the inevitable, but once dirt is pressed into the carpet’s fibers, it’s time to do more than vacuum. It will also fluff the carpet fibers, loosening deep down dirt from within. This will make the overall carpet washing task more effective since it will be able to clean deeper. If your steam carpet cleaner has only one tank, it will also reduce the amount of times you have to change the (dirty) water in the tank, during the carpet cleaning.

While vacuuming, you may also notice small items that could impair a carpet cleaner if allowed to be picked up during the cleaning, such as elastics, hair accessories, small toys and other things that could block the hose and cause some down time. It doesn’t matter either, which type of carpet cleaner you are using, vacuuming prior to cleaning is more effective.

Seriously, you must get down and dirty. You’re gonna have to get on your hands and knees and scrub. You’ll get sweaty. You’ll feel sore the next day. You’ll get a workout! But, your carpet will be clean.

In the “olden days” before there were vacuum cleaners you either swept (which still works to an extent—tough bristles, short quick strokes are key) or took the carpet up and beat the dust and dirt out with a carpet beater (which also works, as long as your carpet isn’t fitted). Alternatively, there are machines that spray water and shampoo into the carpet and suck up the dirty water — but these probably come under the heading of a “vacuum cleaner,” and so aren’t appropriate in your case. Also, they’re not very useful for picking up bigger particles.
